Ooh La La Jewels Du Jour announces Ellen Nichols as Legacy Lady

Ooh La La Jewels Du Jour is proud to announce Ellen Nichols as the second Ooh La La Legacy Lady for the 2017 season. Nichols is the founder of New Horizons of Southwest Florida and Super Kids Club.

Six women have been chosen to represent the community as part of this recognition program this year and will be showcased January through June 2017.

Nichols graduated from Southeastern University with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She has taught in private and public schools for 20 years. In 1995, she completed her Master’s degree in Specific Learning Disabilities and began teaching in an inclusion program for learning disabled students at Pinewoods Elementary School.

Nichols’ interest in working with the Hispanic community began as a young child. She began visiting migrant camps in Lee and Collier Counties with her father and quickly knew she wanted to help wherever she could. She began by organizing weekly meetings to include Spanish speaking ministers.

Seeing the problems in the migrant neighborhoods and recognizing the tremendous need to help the children from non-English speaking homes with their school work, Nichols and her family decided to find a place to provide free after school tutoring. In January 2003, the family opened the first Super Kids Club in Rosemary Park in Bonita Springs. Ellen continues that work to this day and has concentrated her one-on-one efforts with the children, teens, and their families.

“I’m so excited to be recognized as a Legacy Lady,” says Nichols. “We always need help in fundraising and community support and this recognition will help with both. And, for those who want to assist us in our work can do so by participating in the Community Foundation of Collier County’s ‘Give Where You Live’ campaign on Wednesday, February 15. Every donation designated to New Horizons helps with funding a tutor for a needy child.”

The Legacy Lady program was created to celebrate local women who leave a lasting legacy in the community. The recognition program was designed by sisters and co-owners Amy Turner and Tammy Turner Kipp, as a result of the amazing outcome they had from their previous program in 2016, the Ooh La La Ladies.
