Rotary college scholarship recipient “re-gifts” her scholarship

For over 25 years, the Rotary Club of North Fort Myers has been awarding $4,000 college scholarships to a graduating senior at North Fort Myers High School. The scholarship is for $1,000 per year for each year the student is in school, up to a maximum of four years and they must maintain a 3.0 GPA. While past students have been very appreciative, the interaction between the club and the student has been limited to occasional visits to our club when the student is home on break.

This past year we had a truly overwhelming experience. Sarah Florio, recipient of our scholarship in 2004 contacted our club and told us she wanted to “re-gift” her scholarship; she wanted to donate $4,000 to our club so that we could give an additional scholarship. Sarah had gone to the University of Central Florida, graduated with a degree in Hospitality Management, and is having a successful career in the Orlando area. We were flabbergasted and at the same time ecstatic as this was the first time a student had made such an offer.

With Sarah’s “re-gifting” of her scholarship, our club was able to award a second $4,000 scholarship recipient, Sydney Lowman, graduating senior at North Fort Myers High School. Sydney plans to attend the University of South Florida and major in psychology. The Rotary Club of North Fort Myers would like to recognize the significant donation made by Sarah and challenge all students who receive Rotary scholarships to consider matching Sarah’s generosity.
