JLH Sustainable Housing helped to educate Naples High Engineering Students on Solar Home construction

Jim Henderson, founder of JLH Sustainable Housing, LLC, and owner of William C. Huff Companies, provided a special tour of his company’s recently constructed solar home to Naples High School engineering students.
The educational tour and talk took place November 21 at the solar home located at 213 Benson Street in East Naples. The class outing gave students a chance to see firsthand how solar energy a viable source of energy in home construction and, also, gave them a chance to ask questions about the process in building such a structure.
With a passion for giving back to the community, Henderson also has recently dedicated his time to becoming an advisor to the engineering department at Naples High School as well.
Henderson launched JLH Sustainable Housing, LLC with a goal to construct a home made from mostly recycled materials that would be able to run 100 percent on solar power. The original idea of building the home came to Henderson as a solution in solving the issue of price attainable homes for his employees at William C. Huff.
The home was constructed with a steel frame and, IMP walls and roof; (20) 320-watt, micro inverter solar panels producing a total of 6.4 KW of power line the roof. The three-bedroom, two-bath, 1,500 square foot home has a modern industrial theme with exposed metal beams throughout and vaulted ceilings. The home is rated to withstand category five hurricane winds and is mostly fireproof due to the materials used for construction (for brush fires) and is additionally, completely waterproof. The home has no soffits or exterior holes in any part of the walls or roofing to allow water to penetrate or stand.
