Restored and Revitalized: Operation Smile Home for Children Reopens its Doors in Poonah, Trinidad
Fort Myers, FL– March 6, 2024 – In a long-awaited and heartwarming event, on January 27, 2024, the Operation Smile Home for Children in Poonah, Trinidad, unveiled its newly renovated facilities, marking a significant milestone in the journey of hope and healing.

Established in 1997 by Senior Pastor Madho Basdeo, Operation Smile Home for Children provides family-style residential care for abused and abandoned children on a 10-acre plot in Lower Poonah, Williamsville, Trinidad. What began as a humble endeavor has flourished into a thriving community comprising five cottages, a testament to the unwavering dedication of the Basdeo family.

Pastor Madho Basdeo’s commitment to serving vulnerable youth traces back to a poignant encounter in his late teens when he encountered a hungry young boy on the streets. Fueled by empathy, he brought the child home on his motorcycle, igniting the spark of his vision: to provide holistic care for homeless and abandoned children, guiding them toward physical, educational, social, and spiritual fulfillment.

The transformative renovation project undertaken in 2023 aimed to breathe new life into both the physical infrastructure and the spirit of the home. Through the relentless efforts of Men & Women of Action from team South Carolina, raising $50,000 in supplies and one week on the grounds breathing new life into the home, and collaboration with the steadfast support from the home’s partner Haven of Hope International, the cottages underwent a remarkable transformation.
Today, under the dynamic leadership of Director Sandy Joy Basdeo, the home now stands rejuvenated, poised to welcome children once again in April 2024, with renewed vigor and determination.

The grand reopening not only signifies a physical refurbishment but also reaffirms the home’s unwavering commitment to providing a nurturing and supportive environment for vulnerable children. However, sustaining this noble mission necessitates ongoing support from generous donors. Monthly sponsors are urgently sought to ensure the long-term sustainability and enhancement of the home’s services.

In addition to home renovations, plans for a multi-functional Hope Center are underway, including essential facilities such as a kitchen/cafeteria, library, computer lab, infirmary, therapy/visitation room, and a group den/play area for the children. This ambitious project further manifests Madho Basdeo’s vision of comprehensive care and support for the children of Operation Smile Home.
