Lee BIA Builders Care, Trifecta Construction Solutions partner for ADA bathroom remodel for disabled Alva man

Lee BIA Builders Care and Trifecta Construction Solutions recently partnered on an ADA bathroom remodel for a local elderly and disabled man in Alva.

Melvin Lawson is a resilient and community-minded 77-year-old double leg amputee who has proudly lived in his Alva home for over 50 years. A widower, Lawson continues to live independently despite the physical challenges he faces each day, demonstrating unwavering determination.

During a home health visit, a local nursing student identified a pressing safety concern and referred Lawson to Builders Care. His prior bathroom setup posed a significant risk of falls and injury, lacking the accessibility features needed for someone with his mobility needs.

Known for its work with developers and builders to create high-performance, energy-efficient, and water-conscious buildings, Trifecta has long been committed to resilient and healthy communities. With flagship projects such as Babcock Ranch—where the firm has contributed sustainability expertise for nearly two decades—Trifecta is typically focused on strategic consulting. When Trifecta learned of the need from Builders Care, the company stepped beyond its traditional role to provide hands-on support to ensure the successful renovation of a safe, accessible bathroom for Lawson.

“Our firm doesn’t typically engage in direct construction,” said Dr. Jennifer Languell, founder of Trifecta Construction Solutions. “But when we saw the Builders Care request, we wanted to help.”

Thanks to the partnership of generous and compassionate building industry partners, Builders Care was able to provide Lawson with an ADA-accessible bathroom. Incorporating age-in-place principles, the essential renovation allows him to maintain his independence and restore his safety and peace of mind.

“I recently renovated a bathroom in my own home for my parents, who are in their 80s, so I know how essential thoughtful design is for safety and independence,” Languell added. “Providing Mr. Lawson with a secure and accessible space is something we’re truly proud to have been a part of.”

Additional project partners included Coastal Waste & Recycling; Distinctive Shower, Glass and Mirror; HEYYRICH Media; Kelleher Renovations; Lee Health; Montgomery Cabinetry Company; Plumbing Solutions; Pro Contracting; Service Contracting Solutions; Wilson Lighting; and York Electric & Design.

“We are so grateful for all of our wonderful community partners and the work they did to help make this renovation possible,” said Audra McKinney, client services and projects manager at Lee BIA Builders Care. “Melvin is a devoted member of our community, volunteering at the Charleston Park Community Center’s food pantry to serve his neighbors in need. It was important to us that the community come together to support him in return, making his home a safer, more comfortable place to live.”

Since 2005, Lee BIA Builders Care has helped nearly 500 individuals and families by providing A/C repairs, wheelchair ramps, roof replacements, remodeling projects and other critical repairs that allow deserving elderly and/or disabled homeowners, and their families, to live safely and comfortably in their own homes. Projects are made possible through generous donors and community partners who provide labor and materials to bring a project into reality.
