Avow hosts Southwest Florida Antiques Appraisal Fair

Avow’s Southwest Florida Antiques Appraisal fair March 9 and 10 offers area residents the opportunity to see what their treasures are worth, while supporting the nonprofit provider of hospice, palliative care and grief support services.

The event features guests from Doyle New York, regular appraisers on “Antiques Roadshow.” The Preview Event from 5 to 7 p.m. March 9 includes wine, hors d’oeuvres, stories from “Antiques Roadshow” and silent and live auctions, as well as appraisals for guests. Tickets are $150 per person.

The Public Appraisals Day March 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. is $50 per person and includes two appraisals of items including fine jewelry and watches, prints, fine art, furniture, decorative arts, rare books and coins, maps and more.

“In previous years, we had someone with a 75-cent tea set bought at a swap meet find out it was worth hundreds of dollars,” said Annalise Smith, senior vice president of philanthropy at Avow. “People with some really unique items have come. They just wanted to know how much ‘this antique thing I’ve been holding on to’ is worth. Doyle appraisers will share remarkable stories, and the event supports Avow, which has been serving the community for nearly 40 years.”

Doyle was founded in 1962 and is one of the world’s foremost auctioneers and appraisers of fine jewelry, furniture, decorations, Asian works of art, coins, stamps, rare books and specialty categories. Through the years, Doyle has auctioned the estates of James Cagney, Gloria Swanson, Bette Davis, Rock Hudson, Rex Harrison, Ruth Gordon, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Joan Crawford, Beverly Sills, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Lena Horne, Lady Sarah Consuelo Spencer-Churchill, the collection of Alice Appleton Hay, daughter-in-law to John Milton Hay, President Abraham Lincoln’s private secretary; the estate of famed restaurateur Elaine Kaufman of Elaine’s; and rare books and autographs deaccessioned from the New York City Bar Association.
