Providence Family Life Center is a nonprofit dedicated to restoring lives and empowering communities through innovative, evidence-informed programs that focus on disaster recovery support, integrated health – well-being services, and economic stability. Since our inception, we have made a significant impact by serving over 24,512 individuals and generating over $1 million in Social Security income for our beneficiaries through our disability application services. Our commitment to creating safe communities is demonstrated by housing 255 individuals and resolving 225 disaster cases, including the completion of 8 construction projects. Following Hurricane Ian, we have also provided crucial mental health support by facilitating 104 disaster peer support group meetings since August 2023, helping trauma survivors on their journey to well-being. This support group has evolved and is still running today and has expanded to provide peer support and mental well-being services.

Our approach to innovation directly addresses the critical gaps in Florida’s mental health care system, particularly the lack of access and fragmented care, through a unique, community-based model. We recognized that traditional clinical models are often inaccessible, especially for underserved populations and those impacted by large-scale disasters like Hurricanes Ian, Helene, and Milton. Our innovative solution is the Mind Body Movement Living Laboratory (MBMLL), which operates as an applied research center rather than a conventional clinic or fitness center.

Instead of relying solely on traditional talk therapy, which can be a significant barrier for many, the MBMLL provides a new pathway to mental and physical well-being. Our approach is innovative because it integrates evidence-based Mind-Body practices—such as meditative mind, body, and movement modalities—into a single, accessible program. This non-clinical, holistic model offers a powerful alternative to pharmaceutical interventions and a fragmented care system. By focusing on a “living laboratory,” we are constantly adapting and refining our methods based on real-time client feedback and outcomes, ensuring our interventions are effective, purposeful, and directly responsive to community needs. This approach combines trauma-informed social work with the latest research on mind-body science to build resilience and provide practical, self-management tools to our clients.
