Educational Pathways Academy (EPA) Honors Dyslexia Awareness Month in October.
Estero, Florida – September 25, 2024 Established in 2017 to serve students with language-based learning disabilities such as dyslexia, EPA has rapidly grown to two campuses and has introduced a high school program with a focus on career development. October is Dyslexia Awareness Month, and October 8 is International Dyslexia Day. EPA is the only school in the Southwest Florida region that has developed an evidence-based program to serve students with language-based learning disabilities.
At Educational Pathways Academy, we are leading the change in our community. We are dedicated to transforming education for bright students who learn differently by replacing the old, deficit-centered model of education and replacing it with a new, strengths-centered paradigm. Our educational model fosters the cultivation of a student’s natural gifts and talents, while providing the academic interventions and accommodations necessary for every student to reach their highest potential.
Molly Arthur, the Founder and Head of School of Educational Pathways Academy shares, “Chances are, you know someone who is impacted by dyslexia…and that someone may even be you. Dyslexia Awareness Month is an opportunity for everyone to take part in a conversation about a learning disability that impacts 1 in 5 people. It is important for all of us to understand the facts about dyslexia and the best interventions, because we know that dyslexia comes with both challenges and incredible gifts, and with the right educational environment, the future is bright! This October, I hope that our community takes the time to gain a deeper understanding of dyslexia.”
During Dyslexia Awareness Month, it is important to celebrate the strengths of individuals who have a dyslexic learning profile. Some highlights of dyslexic strengths, according to Dr. Julie Logan, professor of entrepreneurship at Bayes Business School in London, include:
Dyslexics are two times as likely to own two or more businesses
40% of entrepreneurs are likely to be dyslexic
Studies have shown that there are two times more dyslexic professionals in fields such as engineering, art, and entrepreneurship compared to the general population!
The way dyslexics process information is a core strength across many different types of tasks. Dyslexics are often extremely good at interconnected reasoning – and tend to be highly creative, perceptive, interdisciplinary, and innovative in how they make connections and seemingly put disparate things together.
Dyslexics share common traits such as a sense of vision, a confident and persistent attitude, excellent oral communication, and a keen sense of intuition.
EPA welcomes media interviews with Founder and Head of School, Molly Arthur and other key administrators who implement life-changing programs. Additionally, EPA offers well-researched facts on dyslexic challenges and strengths, including an overview of research-based instructional approaches that are offered by our school.
