Ooh La La Jewels Du Jour is proud to announce Penny Rambacher as the fifth Ooh La La Legacy Lady for the 2017 season.
Rambacher, a registered dietician, is the founder of Miracles in Action, a local non-profit that provides an income stream to Guatemalan women by selling their beaded jewelry, keycharms, and textiles. All handmade in indigenous Mayan communities, the sale of these handicrafts provides the artisan an opportunity to earn an income from their home while taking care of their children.
Miracles in Action has also raised enough money through donations to coordinate the construction of 54 rural schools, 24 village water systems, 20 vocational workshops, more than 2800 safe fuel efficient stoves, and over 2200 water purification filters in Guatemala.
In her former career as a flight attendant with American Airlines, Penny had the opportunity to travel around the world for work, for pleasure, and to make a difference in the lives of the poor. She and her mother Noreen Rambacher were stunned to see the horrible poverty and wanted to help make a difference. In 1999, they led missions to Ecuador and Guatemala to deliver aid to poor families living at the city dumps and in remote Mayan villages.
In 2001, Noreen Rambacher was diagnosed with cancer and told by doctors that she had three months to live. She felt she was still needed in Guatemala and before she passed away she wanted to leave a legacy by building a rural primary school. “I promised my mother I would carry on her legacy of learning, so we continue to build schools,” says Penny.
In January 2005, both Penny and her mother celebrated the grand opening of School of Miracles #1, named after the miracle that extended Noreen’s life by four years. Penny, a cancer survivor herself, has made it her life’s mission to serve those in need.
Six local women have been chosen to represent the community as part of the Legacy Lady recognition program this year and will be showcased through June 2017. The Legacy Lady program was created to celebrate local women who leave a lasting legacy in the community. The recognition program was designed by sisters and co-owners Amy Turner and Tammy Turner Kipp, as a result of the amazing outcome they had from their previous program in 2016, the Ooh La La Ladies.
